Post subject:  The Paper Game

Hit me up with your best ideas and experiences with the Paper Game. It seems easy to use with action and items, but harder with other vocab sets. Let's get some ideas going here!

Instead of yes/no, use the Word template and add in more to the sentence in the grid. So you use your 2 points (top and grid square) just like any coordination type game (Bombs Away, Get Four)

top: the restaurant
grid answers:
- at 7:00
- after work
questions:
- Did you go to the restaurant at 7:00?
- When did you go to the restaurant?


top: play soccer
grid answers:
- with friends
- alone
questions:
- Did you play soccer with friends?
- Who did you play soccer with?


top: at the mall
grid answers
- buy clothes
- eat ice cream
questions:
- What did you do at the mall?
- What do you like to do at the mall?
- Did you eat ice cream when you were at the mall?
- If you go to the mall tomorrow, will you eat eat ice cream or buy clothes?
- If there were no school tomorrow, would you go to the mall and eat ice cream?

there are a few more ideas here http://www.mes-english.com/forums/viewt ... =6194#6194 and it goes over how to use the game without names, making the final question something like "Do you live on Elm Street?" or "You are 32 years old, right?"

Using the single sets you end up with questions like these:

nouns:
- Do you have ...?
- Do you want ...?
- Have you ever found/eaten/made/played ...?

verbs:
- Did you ...?
- Would you ...?
- When you were younger, did you used to ...?

Adjectives:
- Is your bag ...?
- Are your shoes ...?
- Does your brother feel ...?

This game is pretty cool. I posted this earlier, but I will put it here too.

Instead of having the students guess which person they are thinking of, I took away the names and just put numbers 1-12.

Before we start, the students draw numbers to determine which line on the grid their answers will correspond to.

The object now is to find which of their classmates is which number and write in the correct names. The first student to finish wins.

I love that they can ask questions in present, past, future, present perfect, etc., etc... So it is great for all levels.

The Paper Game works really well for practicing questions. Did you have a question and answer target language related to family members? or do you just want to practice the straight vocabulary?

Thanks for your response and thanks so much for your wonderful work. My students LOVE your flashcard images. Every time I introduce a new set, I get a great reaction.

I don't really have a question related to this set of vocabulary, although afterwards, we will add in some adjectives to describe family members, I could work in a question. Any guidance you could provide would be great!

kmm - I'm glad to hear that the students are enjoying the materials.

The Paper Game works by combining the top row and left column to make a question.

So, across the top, you could put some places, like "in the kitchen", "at school", "in the yard", "in the living room" ...

Then, down the side the family member vocabulary

____________| in the kitchen | at school | in the yard
sister ____________ yes ________ no _____ yes
brother __________ yes ________ yes _____ no
father ___________ no ________ yes _____ yes
mother ___________ no ________ no _____ no
grandfather _______ yes ________ no _____ yes
grandmother ______ no ________ yes _____ no

and then you have one of the students choose a family member to be, for example I'll choose one and you can try to guess who I am by asking 2 questions.

A (you): Are you in the kitchen?
B (me): No, I'm not.
A: Are you in the yard?
B: No, I'm not.

// Now, given the information, I'm either the mother or the grandmother. You have to try and guess which one. //

A: Are you the mother?
B: No, I'm not. I'm the grandmother.

** A doesn't win. A doesn't get to take B's paper **


You could put other information in the grid to make a variety of questions. For example:

____________| wake up | eat breakfast
sister _________ at 6:30 ___ at 7:00
brother _______ at 6:15 ___ at 7:00
father ________ at 6:15 ___ at 6:45


With something like this, the students would ask: "What time do you ..?"

A: What time do you wake up?
B: I wake up at 6:15.
A: What time do you eat breakfast?
B: I eat breakfast at 6:45.

A: Are you the father?
B: Yes.

** A wins because she guessed correctly. A takes one of B's papers **

Does that make more sense?
