Post Game of the Week: Curiosity?
Hello Mark,

I just wanted to write and thank you for your continued efforts on behalf of the rest of us in the ESL community. I teach here in Osaka and have enjoyed your shows very much. I did have a question about the game of the week: Curiosity - I did not quite understand how it worked. I went to your site (eslteachertalk.com) but could not locate the show notes - can you direct me to this area? Also, I wanted to ask you if it might be possible to put up a visual - perhaps a picture or two of an actual game session and how it displays on a whiteboard.

Thanks again for this wonderful pod cast.

Regards,

- listener

I'm glad you like the podcasts :)

The activity is really loose and that may be why it was difficult to follow. The other reason is I usually do these shows at about 1:00am after a pretty a full day of teaching. So, sometimes even I don't know what I'm saying.

Basically, I just write a sentence up on the board.

"He went there and took it with out asking."

From there students ask questions. And it's basically what teachers do in free talking time. We just try to get the students to ask more and more about the information that pops up. When the conversation comes to a dead end just pop back to the original topic and ask a new stream of questions. Here's an example and maybe that will help.

What's his name? --> Tom
How old is he? --> 72 years old.
Where's he from? --> Australia.
__Where in Australia? --> (ouch I only know 2 cities) Um.. Sidney.
_____Did he go to college in Sidney? --> No, he went to college in the States
________Where did he go? --> He went to Syracuse.
___________What did he study? --> He studied communications.
Where does he live now? --> He lives in Nagano.
__Where in Nagano? --> Nagano City
_____How long has he lived there? --> For 4 years.
________Does he have a house there? --> No, he rents an apartment.
___________Where's his apartment? --> It's near Nagano Station.
What did he take? --> He took a computer.
__What kind of computer was it? --> It was a Dell.
_____...
...

The teacher just makes up the answers as they go along. You can be brief to try get more questions or add content via your answers. For example,
    Does he have a house there? --> No, he rents an apartment with his girlfriend.

Now we have a whole new topic to ask questions about.

Eventually, I try to get the students to do it to each other in the preliminary free talking time.

Mark: What did you do last weekend, Mr. Yanagisawa?
M. Y: I went to Gunma.
(Mark thinks to himself.. Really and just came back?)
Mark: Does anyone have any questions about that?

Then the students take their cue to start asking questions like in the game.

I hope that helps explain it a bit better.
